How to install the Origami database in SQL Server
1 0

Let's jump onto the installation of the Origami database then! First you need to download the zip file from the releases page (be smart and check the SHA-256 to make sure you are downloading the legitimate version).

Unzip it somewhere and you will notice a file called origami.bacpac.

Then, you need to open SSMS (SQL server management studio), connect to the 2022-2025 server you want to install the new database. Warning: ask for a database administrator's help, because you will need a connection with elevated privileges.

Open the databases folder inside SSMS and right-click on it. Select "Import data-tier application". A wizard window will appear to you.

Click next to proceed with the import, if necessary. At the Specify the BACPAC to import window, click on Import from local disk and browse to the location of the origami.bacpac file to select it. Click next.

At the Specify settings for the new database window, pick a name for the importation and click next. If you want to change the location of the files inside your server, do it carefully. Click next.

Wait for a few moments and voilà! You succesfully imported Origami's database into your Microsoft SQL server.

Creating a new server login and database user

You need to execute the following script in your SQL server, replacing [MyAppLogin] with the proper username and [YourDatabase] with the database name you just installed:

USE [master];
GO

-- Create the server login
CREATE LOGIN [MyAppLogin]
WITH PASSWORD = 'YourStrongPasswordHere';
GO

-- Switch to the target database
USE [YourDatabase];
GO

-- Create a database user mapped to the login
CREATE USER [MyAppLogin]
FOR LOGIN [MyAppLogin];
GO

-- Add the user to the standard data access roles
ALTER ROLE [db_datareader] ADD MEMBER [MyAppLogin];
ALTER ROLE [db_datawriter] ADD MEMBER [MyAppLogin];
GO

-- Grant EXECUTE permission on the required stored procedures
GRANT EXECUTE ON OBJECT::[dbo].[usp_GetBrowserHistory] TO [MyAppLogin];
GRANT EXECUTE ON OBJECT::[dbo].[usp_GetHistoryByFormat] TO [MyAppLogin];
GRANT EXECUTE ON OBJECT::[dbo].[usp_GetPlatformHistory] TO [MyAppLogin];
GO

Keep those key words safe (user login, password, database name and server address), you will need them to configure and boot up the Origami applications.

Recommendations

If you are planning on running your Microsoft SQL Server on docker, please be aware that docker containers need extra configuration to isolate them from external access. If you really want to have ports opened for your SQL server, be my guest.
